Today's "music"

This year, around Independance Day, I was watching a rerun of an old program when I became vividly aware of something. We never seem to hear any of the music that inspires us to be patriotic except around July 4th. What happens the rest of the year? Well, that's what I want to discuss this week.

What happened to the songs that make us appreciate the United States of America? Where are all of the renditions of "America the Beautiful", "The Star-Spangeled Banner", "God Bless America", "Proud to be an American", and "Stars and Stripes Forever". These are all touching and inspirational songs with some real substance. Although some words are considered "mean-spirited" because the word "God" does not refer President Bill Clinton who can't keep his belt loops above his knees. But that is a discussion for another day.

These great songs refer to the battles fought to achieve this country's greatness and the God-given blessings that we have received. But these great songs have been reduced to use in commercials for the Fourth of July banana rack sale at Sallys Junk Imporium. The lyrics of these great songs go hand-in-hand with the "Pledge of Alligence", a ritual that once meant exactly what it says but now get's little respect and is rarely practiced. The powerful words of these songs have not lost their dramatic meaning, but somehow most Americans seem to have lost thier ability to become inspired by the words. When you go to a sporting event, most everyone stands for the national anthem, but few put their right hands over their hearts. Fewer still, seem to seek out the flag and turn to face it. Most of all, there is a lot of chatter going on. What happened to our respect for this music, or more importantly, what it stands for?

Things have changed over the years. Our respect and desire for the music that inspired the patriotism in our society had faded. Inspirational music is no longer desired. Today's music inspires us to have sex, take drugs, and act in other immoral or illegal manners.

Now hear some rappin' garbage about cop killing and the degredation of human life by "Six Pack McClure". Or we hear something that we can't understand being yoddeled by some head banger group of pink haired numbskulls that call themselves the "Skank Nasty Toe Jam". These people provide a bunch of talentless noise with no moral, entertaining, or otherwise useful values. They become popular because of the freak shows that they put on and because this society is stupid enough to support them.

Somewhere out there is a bunch of idiots wearing black trenchcoats, makeup, and fingernail polish. No, I don't mean weird girls. These are guys, I think. They called themselve Charles Manson and Marilyn Monroe, or something like that. Did I see one of them actually sucking on a pacifier? He may act like a 6 month old wearing what ever clown suit was put on him, laying on the floor and playing with his feet, but this guy was a full grown man.

It is utterly disgusting that our youngsters like these morons, but is even more disgusting that their parents allow it. Let's face it; Their music must be terrible. What other reason could there possibly be for the freak show?

I have been told that people look and act like this to get attention and to "express themselves". Maybe they could get some positive attention by being good musicans rather than a gaggle of guitar burning, makeup wearing bed wetters. If we could understand what these pacifier suckers are saying, they could easily express themselves through strong lyrics. Much more effective, I think.

No thanks. I will just listen to some classical music and gospel hymns because I can understand the lyrics and the musicians don't dress like Floppy the Clown when they sing them.
